I am doing a piece on prices charged by mechanics. This piece will be pro-mechanic. Any mechanics here want to help me make sure I get my facts straight? Email me directly at Lehto@kennon.com.
Thanks!

What is the typical mark-up on Eye-of-newt this time of year?
I’m asking for a friend.

Oh, well, for artisanal eye of newt it has to be hand-harvested, so it’s out of season. Canned is okay in a pinch, I guess, but it’ll probably be April before a good crop is available.Your local Framer’s Market may have a newt-farmer, though. Typically around two silver pieces if you go that route.

If you have to ask, you can’t afford it. You may need to stick w/ salamander.

My brother-in-law are accredited YouTube mechanics (we watch the video then do the repair, we’re still waiting for YouTube to send our diplomas) We got into the habit of calling a shop (usually some chain shop) to get the professional price to see how much we saved. Some were outrages, like $800 to do rear struts on a 2001 Camry, when it only took us 2 hrs and something like $250 of parts. I think the ABS ring on my wifes Escape would have cost like $300 and it was a $10 part and an hours of work

I work at a Mom and Pop style dealer that has changed very little since the 60's. The service department is hourly (no flat rate) and I earn 20% of the shop labor rate pre-tax. It's a unique situation for sure but if you have any questions about a small old dealer I can try and answer them

You might have to substitute boiled hen wattle with ground serpent’s teeth, for what it’ll cost you.

My mom owns a garage and has two ASE master techs in her employ. If there’s any specific questions you have I’ll bounce them off of her.

Ford warranty pay is a joke. As is all manufacturers. But Ford is the only one I’m familiar with.
